Performance through Cinema (Spring 2022)
March 16-March 30, 6:15pm
Humanities Center, Room D
University of Rochester
On Film’s Spring 2022 program is Performance Through Cinema, a three-day series that explores different iterations of performance as a conceptual paradigm in cinema. It features works by Peggy Ahwesh, Catalina Segu Jensen, Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, Meredith Monk, Basma Alsharif, Thirza Cuthand, Standish Lawder, Harun Farocki, and Naomi Uman. The first screening, “Body/Place/Performance,” underscores how performing bodies create imaginary geographies and activate histories of place. The second screening expands on these explorations of performance with a program titled “Performance/Anti-performance,” which features three works that test the limits of what constitutes performance. Our final screening, “Performing Mediums,” presents filmmakers figuring the mediums of film, TikTok, and video games as performing entities in themselves. Together, the three screenings inquire into the complex relationship between cinema and performance and the possibility of cinema to critique various kinds of performance.
